The Internet: a strategic promotional tool for Asia

Internet popularity continues to grow in China where the current number of Internet users amounts to 253 million according to Internet World Stats. China has thus surpassed the number of users in US, making it the country with the most Internet users in the world. In all, Asian users represent almost 40% of the world’s Internet users, a number that will undoubtedly increase considering that the penetration rate is still low in many countries.

World rank Countries Users (Million) Penetration rate
1 China (excl. HK and Macau) 253 17,3%
3 Japan 94 73,8%
9 South Korea 35 70,7%

January 26 marks the start of the 2009 Chinese New Year. Determined by a lunisolar calendar, Chinese New Year’s Day (also known as Tet Festival in Vietnam and Seollal in Korea) differs from one year to the next. Millions of people over several days, in Asia and elsewhere, will celebrate this holiday, which is the year’s most important holiday. Although it differs from country to country, it usually includes purification rituals and ancestral cults, visits to family and parents as well as meals prepared specially for the occasion.

Every year is assigned a symbol according to a cycle of 12 years. This year is that of the Ox or Yi Chou 己丑, the second animal in the Chinese calendar. People born in the year of the Ox are known for being determined, organised and loyal to their loved ones.
